What Makes A Good Music Video?

Analysis of Music Videos

Consider: camera angles, editing, mise-en-scene, sound,lip-synching? Relationship of music to visuals?
Narrative based:'The Decemberists' with '16 Military Wives'

-Small sections of lipsynching.
-Slow, contiunual editing.

-Different characters representing different people from different places/countries.
-Political narrative.
-Range of different people from a variety of ethnicities used.
-Narratives-America is powerful, making war with everyone else.
-Subtitles used over the video footage to add more detail and make the meaning behind the narrative more clear to the audience.
-Influenced by a film - inter-texuality

Performance based: 'The White Stripes' with 'The Hardest Button to Button'
-Lip synching throughout the whole video.
-Instruments playing along with the song, matching the music.
-Jerky, disjointed, quick cuts match the bass of the song.
-Retro feel to the video, with non-electronic music that is more common nowadays.
-The song is fairly simple, but the interesting nature of the video keeps the audience entertained throughout.
-The video is memorable so people are more likely to remember the band and the song as a result of this, as they can easily make the connection between the two.
Concept based: OK Go, Here It Goes Again
Concept based music videos don't tell a story or show a live performance, instead they are a clever idea, or a more original music video than traditional videos. An example of this is 'Here It Goes Again'
